Indeed, England, seeking to cut Spain's throat on the route to the Indies and seize the Empire, attacked Cartagena de Indias, the key to the Antilles, with 180 ships, 23,600 men, and 3,000 artillery pieces, compared to the only 2,800 men, 6 ships, and 300 cannons with which Blas de Lezo defended it. Despite the difference in forces, the English attempt ended in resounding failure thanks to Lezo's strategy.
