ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The quintessential classic adventure.

Translation and introduction by Joan Casas Fuster.

Afterword by José Ángel Valente, acclaimed poet, essayist, and translator.

Odysseus's journey has become a universal myth, and The Odyssey remains a timeless work for readers of every generation. After a decade of war, an offense against the god Poseidon keeps the cunning hero away from his kingdom for another ten years, condemned to wander the seas and endure countless trials and hardships. Set after the fall of Troy, The Odyssey follows the adventures of Odysseus--known by his Latin name, Ulysses, which this translation adopts--and recounts his long and arduous voyage home to Ithaca. The myths that shape this great epic, Homer's vivid portrayal of life in the Mediterranean at the end of the second millennium BCE, and the emergence of a hero driven by his longing to return to his homeland have inspired some of literature's greatest authors--from Virgil to Joyce--and established The Odyssey as a cornerstone of world culture.

This edition features a prologue and the magnificent verse translation by Fernando Gutiérrez, along with an introduction and extensive notes prepared by translator and journalist Joan Casas, and an afterword by the poet, essayist, and translator José Ángel Valente.
