Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Where does history end and politics begin? In this incisive work, Herbert B. Adams argues that the two are inseparable, especially in public life and the classroom. Ideas become policy, then memory. Adams writes with the urgency of a reformer, asking what historians owe the nation, and what nations do with historians. In late nineteenth century America, as citizenship and the state were redefined, Is History Past Politics reads as a political history essay, a historiography lecture text, and an academic political pamphlet at once. Adams, a pioneering figure in American historical training, presses readers to notice politics in historical study: historical method and politics meet in sources, in interpretation, in the uses of the past. Clear, compact, and argumentative, it rewards casual readers who want context for today as well as students of historiography seeking a foundational statement of purpose. Its influence sits behind professional historiography in the United States, linking seminar training to civic responsibility in print again. It also serves as a crisp political science reference for anyone tracing Gilded Age political thought and the emergence of modern civic education and history. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Add it to a Herbert B Adams collection, or place it beside complete historiography classics: a small book with lasting force, and a reminder that the past is never merely past.
