Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Before Pittsburgh swallowed its neighbour, Allegheny City fought back in print. Local voices speak here. Consolidation: An Address to the Citizens of Allegheny City and Vicinity, Against Consolidation with the City of Pittsburgh is a vivid historical political pamphlet from the heart of the city consolidation debate, arguing passionately for local self government and civic identity. Written in the nineteenth century, at a turning point in Allegheny City history, it offers a clear, urgent glimpse into the anti annexation movement and the fears, hopes, and reasoning of residents determined to preserve their municipality. At once municipal government treatise and street-level manifesto, it is invaluable to scholars of urban history, students of American municipal reform, and any reader curious about the roots of modern metropolitan politics and Pittsburgh political history. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions, this primary source edition has been carefully prepared from the original so that its language, arguments, and historical texture can be read with ease. Restored for today's and future generations, it fits naturally into any historical pamphlet collection while remaining accessible to interested general readers exploring nineteenth century Pittsburgh for the first time. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure, this volume preserves a rare voice in the long conversation over who controls the American city.
