Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

In "The Paris Sketch Book", Thackeray reflects on his experiences in Paris, providing readers with a series of essays and sketches that depict various aspects of French society, art, politics, and culture in the early 19th century. The collection covers a wide range of subjects, from the city's bustling streets and vibrant artistic scene to its political tensions. Thackeray's writing is rich with satire and humor, often contrasting French and British social norms. He critiques both nations' hypocrisies while maintaining an engaging and entertaining style. Through his keen observations, Thackeray provides a vivid portrayal of Parisian life and its complexities, seen through the eyes of a perceptive Englishman."The Irish Sketch Book" focuses on Thackeray's travels throughout Ireland. Like the Paris volume, this collection features Thackeray's sharp wit and satirical tone as he describes the people, landscapes, and towns he encounters. Thackeray's observations reflect the political and social climate of Ireland at the time, particularly in the aftermath of the Act of Union (1801). He comments on the stark differences between rural and urban Ireland, touching on themes of poverty, religious divisions, and cultural contrasts between Ireland and England. Despite the often serious subject matter, Thackeray's humor and ability to capture the eccentricities of the Irish people make the collection lively and engaging.
