Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Long before Magellan, the archipelago had a history. A world before galleons arrived. In A thousand years of Philippine history before the coming of the Spaniards, historian Austin Craig brings the Philippines before 1521 into sharp focus, tracing how islands at the edge of empires forged their own patterns of power, belief, and exchange. This is philippine history nonfiction with momentum: an absorbing precolonial history book that follows precolonial Filipino culture through seafaring, settlement, diplomacy, and the pressures of early Philippine trade in the wider Malay and Asian world. Drawing on early accounts and comparative historical clues, Craig helps you picture a pre Spanish Philippines that was dynamic, connected, and already debating identity long before Europe arrived. The result is a clear, readable bridge between ancient Philippines history and the Spanish conquest Philippines context, without letting the story begin at colonisation. A touchstone among southeast asian history classics, it remains a useful Southeast Asia research reference for philippine history students, while offering casual readers a compelling way to understand what was at stake when the colonial era began. Presented here as a complete text edition, it rewards both continuous reading and thoughtful return visits. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
