It's an African retelling of the ant-and-the-grasshopper fable. During the dry season, Danda - a large brown ant and leader of his colony - teaches the younger ants to haul wheat grains back to the nest and stockpile food for the rains. A tortoise, lounging on a cliff with his friend the hare, mocks the effort: food is plentiful, the rainy season is far off, why not relax? He gathers the cat, dog, and elephant to jeer, and spreads the story through the forest while the ants work themselves to exhaustion.The rains arrive and flood everything. Roads turn to rivers, farms disappear underwater, and even the animal king goes hungry. The ants stay dry and well-fed on their stores. The tortoise, with an empty house and a starving family, finds no help from the hare and finally knocks at the ants' nest, apologizing for his mockery. Danda refuses - they saved only enough for themselves - and closes the door. The lesson lands: the following dry season, the tortoise and the other mockers take their families to the farmlands and store food for the rains.This book is bilingual in English and French.
