Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

"The Shaving of Shagpat" by George Meredith is a fantastical tale set in a mythical Arabian world, where the protagonist, Shibli Bagarag, a barber from Shiraz, embarks on a quest that intertwines destiny, change, and the supernatural. The narrative begins with Shibli Bagarag's encounter with an old woman who prophesies his rise to greatness through the act of shaving Shagpat, a revered figure in the city. Despite initial setbacks, including public humiliation and physical punishment, Shibli is driven by the promise of achieving great things. His journey is marked by encounters with various characters, including a Vizier who shares his desire to humble Shagpat, and the mysterious old woman who aids him in his quest. The story unfolds with a blend of humor, adventure, and philosophical musings, exploring themes of fate, change, and the pursuit of greatness. Interwoven within the main narrative is the poignant story of Bhanavar the Beautiful, a tale of love, loss, and the consequences of desire. Bhanavar, a maiden of extraordinary beauty, becomes entangled with a magical jewel that brings both power and tragedy. Her story serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of unchecked transformation and the fleeting nature of beauty and power. Meredith's work is a rich tapestry of allegory and fantasy, drawing on Arabian Nights' motifs to create a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
