Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

A city of the symbolic importance of Granada--the object and subject of so many significant historical events related to the world of al-Andalus, the discovery of the Americas, academic thought, literature, music, and political and agrarian transformations--demands a theory. With its imposing material witnesses to Islamic, Renaissance, and Baroque history, it sought in vain--in the deepest complicit secrecy of its citizens--to resolve the contradictions of its narrative through the grand deception of the leaden books of Sacromonte in the 16th and 17th centuries, and through the fraudulent excavations of the Albaicín in the 18th century. A city in a state of permanent fitna or civil war since before the conquest, manifested in the struggles between the Zegríes and the Abencerrajes, followed by the fratricidal war of the Alpujarras, and finally culminating in the fighting between liberals and conservatives, dramatized by the public execution of the liberal heroine Mariana Pineda, and to round out the myth, with the assassination of Federico García Lorca and the Republican elite during the Civil War of 1936. From Ganivet's *La Bella de Granada* to Lejárraga-Martínez Sierra's *Emotional Guide to Granada*, Granada has been the subject of intellectual curiosity like few other Spanish cities. It almost cries out for an interpretation--valid for both locals and visitors--of its labyrinths and achievements. Because above all else, in Granada we witness the triumph of the aesthetic, manifested above all in the paradigm embodied by the Alhambra. This book by anthropologist and historian José Antonio González Alcantud offers an open-ended, rather than definitive, response to the numerous episodes that together constitute the Theory of Granada.
