"Hello, everyone! Lemon Jello here for Pixie-Funky-Fuzz-Funny-Tattler! One question parents often ask their children is, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?'

"While in most cases the parent does not expect an in depth answer from their child, the asking often prompts the child's imagination to dream about their future; like wanting to become a famous actor or a renowned doctor or maybe even the President of the United States. Kids with a unique talent often reply they want to perfect that talent; singer, artist, dancer or maybe to excel in a sport. Dreams are meant to be exciting and adventurous.

"But the realities of life may guide us to become something we did not dream of...like becoming a master of a skilled trade. Perhaps the lack of exposure to how important and how rewarding skilled trades can be is why skilled trades do not top our dreams of what we want to be.

"For example...ME...Lemon Jello! My father wanted me to study law. Mom wanted me to be an accountant. I didn't like either idea. I wanted a career in something exciting; nothing routine. I dreamed of being a ballerina. But I had one big problem; I'm a lousy dancer. When I try to dance, it's like I have two left feet, no balance and I trip over things that no one else can even see.

"Then one day I was watching TV news and it hit me. Well, nothing actually hit me; it just dawned on me, so to speak."I wanted to be a TV news reporter! So, with a lot of hard work in learning the skills required in the trade; here I am with PFFFT! TV news!

"And now I want to introduce other young folks to skilled trades that they may enjoy and be proud of as well as earn a good living doing. So, on behalf of PFFFT! TV news! I will be interviewing representatives of several skilled trades. These people are highly trained in specialties our world depends on; everyday, twenty-four/seven.

"The trades we will interview today are skilled electricians, carpenters, plumbers, mechanics, roughnecks, crane operators and welders. The things we hope to learn about each trade include what is the trade's history, why is the trade important to us, what does the future hold for the trade and what are the trade's major challenges? And let me emphasize that these are only a few of the many skilled trades that we want to interview in our series about skilled trades. But we do not have time to do all of them today. In the future we will talk to train engineers, chefs, landscapers, ranchers, farmers, military...and the list goes on-and-on."
