Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Before he was a name on a business, before he was a father whose death would send his son looking for a way to carry him forward - he was a seventeen-year-old boy borrowing a camera he didn't yet know how to use, courting a girl three rows ahead of him in church, in a country at war with itself. Before the Name imagines the interior life of Archway - a real man, seen here through fiction rather than fact - across decades in Rhodesia and the country it became. It follows his courtship with Ruth against a curfew and a conflict neither of them speaks of directly, the sudden loss that shapes the family before their wedding ever happens, and the accident of circumstance that puts a borrowed camera in his hands at someone else's wedding - the beginning of a craft he never set out to have. What follows is not a rise-and-fall story. It's the accumulation of an ordinary, well-lived life: a marriage, three sons, a reputation built one careful choice at a time, and a closing evening that leaves as much unanswered as it resolves. This novel completes a trilogy that began with A Debt of Honor and continued with Worthy of the Name - turning, at last, to the man whose name both of those books carried. You don't need to have read the first two to read this one. But if you have, you'll recognize exactly whose story this finally is.
