Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Every human life begins with an arrival. But the stories surrounding that arrival are remarkably different.First Breath explores how cultures across the world have understood one of humanity's most fundamental experiences: the beginning of life.Moving across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Arab world and the Middle East, Iran and the Persian world, the Americas, and Oceania, Vicky Kondylarou follows the connections between Earth, fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, the first breath, and the naming of a child.Drawing on anthropology, history, linguistics, archaeology, museum collections, documented oral traditions, and cultural research, the book examines both the differences and the unexpected connections between human communities. Earth may be imagined as mother in one tradition and father in another. Birth may be surrounded by ritual, protection, family memory, or ancestral presence. A name may express hope, preserve the circumstances of a birth, connect a child with previous generations, or become the first story that child carries through life.Rather than reducing these traditions to a single universal belief, First Breath approaches each culture on its own terms, asking what the many ways of welcoming a human being into the world can tell us about our shared humanity. From Earth to mother, from mother to child, and from first breath to first name, this is the story of how a human life begins.
