Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

One promise. A year and a day. No way on earth of proving it.In Saint-Vespers a vow sworn where a bell can hear it becomes the past, and goes into that parish's book, and is true for ever. A vow sworn out of reach binds nobody, and nothing said there ever happened. Writing has no standing. The record is everything, and the record is a bell.Ivo Cauldwell has just been let out of the office that made him take a hand, or a memory, or a capacity to hope out of sixty-one people. He is free, and believed, and ruined. He carries four hundred oaths at one weight and has never once in his life been able to tell whether anybody meant a word they said to him.So he asks Mabry Strand for one thing, in the deafest ground in the country, where it cannot possibly bind: owe me something. She gives him three clauses and a date.Nine days later the Guild binds her over for a year and a day. No undertaking of any kind, to any person, in any place - twelve attendances at Highcross, and forty-two counts of false peal that fall in together the hour she breaks it. She is a Sitter. She attends the dying. The one thing she has ever had to give anybody is a sentence at three in the morning, and she is now forbidden to say it.Meanwhile the new Warden of the Peal - decent, transparent, entirely serious, and never once cruel - has decided to end the Peal itself, and the price of that is nine people who work for him.And on the first of Lenten-month she has to stand in a road and tell a man something true, knowing that he cannot check it, and that he will put it with the other four hundred.Owe Me Something is the last book of The Ninth Gift.
