Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Boone Barlow has finally become a Junior Detective in Training. All it took was one mail-order course, a plastic badge, a certificate, and eleven minutes of experience. Then Grady Grumblegrit hurls a tomato across the street and accuses Boone of stealing his crop. So much for a quiet first day.The evidence is stranger than a cactus in a bathtub. Grady's tomatoes are gone, his vines are flattened, two wheel ruts cross the dirt, and clusters of eight round footprints cover the garden. Before Boone can organize his thoughts, a gigantic web appears on Main Street and a rumor races through Possum Gap. A towering, mutated Mexican red-knee tarantula has escaped from Tumbleweed Tangle, and it may be headed for the annual flower float parade.Possum Gap panics with impressive speed. Protection whistles shriek. Paper-cup spider traps sell out. Hairy legs wave above rooftops, scratching sounds hiss beneath the pagoda, and enormous shadows crawl across windows. School bully Hank Hoggins seems prepared for every emergency, but Boone is too busy proving his abilities to notice how profitable panic can be.Unfortunately, Boone's detective equipment works best at creating additional mysteries. He gets wrapped around a barber pole, mistaken for a giant egg sac, dusted in fingerprint powder, disguised as a poncho spider, and dragged down Main Street behind a runaway bait cart. His spider model even goes airborne, which is not covered in the instruction manual. With the parade days away, Boone must stop chasing exciting theories and start following evidence. Wade maps the routes, Piper studies fibers and mechanical clues, and Ruby traces the rumor toward its source. Together, they uncover knots, wheels, wires, hidden sounds, and one suspicious tomato costume. Is Possum Gap really being stalked by a giant tarantula? Can Boone save the parade before his almost-professional career collapses into tomato pulp? Packed with illustrated antics, fair-play clues, wild misunderstandings, and West Texas humor, The Case of the Towering Tarantula from Tumbleweed Tangle is a fast, funny mystery for readers ages eight to ten and anyone who knows confidence is not the same thing as a license.
