The terraces, roads, temples, and storehouses were built by households that owed their labor to the state, and the empire fell not to Spanish steel alone but to a succession war, an epidemic, and an invasion that arrived close enough together to break the chain of obligation at the top while the machinery at the base went on working for new masters.
