Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The recording is real. The problem is what it proves.Three years after the events that changed her life, forensic audio specialist Mara Vale has learned to distrust recordings that arrive with explanations. Then she is asked to examine the final voice note of investigative journalist Carys Bell, found dead at the bottom of a hotel stairwell. The recording appears damning: in Carys's own voice, she warns her sister not to believe her husband if he claims her death was an accident. The voice is authentic. The file shows no obvious signs of manipulation. But Mara hears something everyone else has missed. The room.Carys's words were not recorded where people believe they were. And when Mara receives an anonymous audio file containing forty-two seconds of almost complete silence, she discovers the same acoustic signature hidden inside it.Her search leads to Verity House, a private organisation where frightened people rehearse the things they might one day need to say: accusations, confessions, fears, even their own deaths. There Mara discovers that Carys recorded not one warning, but several-each naming a different person, each apparently genuine, and each capable of telling a very different story. As Mara follows the trail Carys left behind, the distinction between truth and evidence begins to fracture. A recording can be authentic and still mislead. A person's uncertainty can be made to sound like guilt. And a true sentence, placed in the wrong context, can become more dangerous than a lie.For Mara, the investigation carries an uncomfortable familiarity. After everything she learned from her sister Ellie, she knows better than most that records do not simply preserve the truth-they preserve versions of it. And Carys knew about the Vale case before she died. She may even have chosen Mara because of it.But the deeper Mara listens, the more disturbing the question becomes. If the recording is genuine, the voice is real and every word was actually spoken... how can the story it tells still be false? The Sound of Her Silence is a psychological mystery thriller about truth, memory, privacy and the dangerous certainty of evidence-and the second novel in the series beginning with The Shape of Her Absence. Some lies are fabricated. The most convincing ones don't need to be.
