The Groaning Body: A Theology of the Body in the Pauline World* is an analytical study of embodiment in Paul's letters, tracing the apostle's vision of the human body from its frailty as "dust" to its promise of resurrection "glory" (1 Cor 15:47-49). Moving through Paul's key texts on flesh, Spirit, suffering, and new creation, the book places Paul in sustained dialogue with John Paul II's Theology of the Body while pressing both through the critical lenses of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler on power, discipline, and gender. Written at the intersection of the classroom and the hospice bedside, it argues that Paul neither despises the body nor romanticizes it: the mortal, breakable body - the jar of clay of 2 Corinthians 4:7 - is precisely the site where divine glory is revealed and where resurrection hope takes flesh.
