Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The Fast of Gedaliah is one of the most discreet days in the Jewish calendar. Yet it preserves the memory of a decisive event: after the destruction of Jerusalem and the First Temple, when a small community was still struggling to survive in Judah, Gedaliah son of Ahikam was assassinated. With his death, the last possibility of political renewal collapsed.Drawing on the biblical accounts in the Second Book of Kings and the Book of Jeremiah, this book retraces the fall of Jerusalem, the attempt to rebuild a community at Mizpah, the tensions among the survivors, and the violence that drove many of them toward exile in Egypt. Why did Jewish tradition establish a fast in memory of Gedaliah? What does this story reveal about trust, responsibility, internal division, and the difficult work of rebuilding after catastrophe?Accessible, thoughtful, and historically grounded, The Fast of Gedaliah sheds light on a little-known fast day whose message still speaks to those seeking to understand how communities endure, remember, and hope.
