Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

A kingdom celebrates its gods with blood, sacrifice, and ancient customs that few dare to question. One young prince sees the suffering behind the ceremonies and quietly decides that when the throne becomes his, he will find a way to end the killing without creating more of it. His answer begins beneath a sacred banyan tree and grows into one of the boldest schemes in the Jātaka tradition.

Years later, the prince becomes king and announces a vow so shocking that it spreads through Benares by drumbeat. One thousand wrongdoers, he declares, will be offered in sacrifice. Fear races through the city, old habits suddenly become dangerous, and the people begin changing their behavior before the king ever needs to raise a hand against them.

This memorable Jātaka tale follows a ruler who uses intelligence, patience, and an understanding of human nature to transform an entire kingdom. It is a story of strategy, restraint, and the surprising power of a carefully chosen threat, ending with the Buddha revealing the ancient life in which he first used this clever plan for the good of others.
