Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

How did Muslim students move from memorizing a short creed to understanding theology, worship, character, and the disciplined life of learning?Volume I of Islamic Learning from West Africa to the Atlantic World follows that question across the western Islamic world. Through Arabic source texts, facing English translations, and editorial commentary, it brings together materials from Ibn Tūmart, al-Sanūsī, al-Mallālī, al-Awjalī, and a West African teaching codex. The volume traces a cumulative educational logic: concise texts establish a stable object for memorization; teachers unpack those texts according to the learner's capacity; doctrine is connected to ritual and spiritual discipline; and written transmission interacts with memory, commentary, and vernacular explanation.Ibn Tūmart's theological texts and selected Muwaṭṭaʾ passages frame knowledge as the result of disciplined seeking. Al-Sanūsī's graded theological tradition shows how doctrine leads into spiritual formation. Al-Mallālī preserves the teacher at work-explaining, correcting, transmitting, and joining theology to devotion. Al-Awjalī's mnemonic creed provides a bridge into West African teaching, while the final codex reveals an elementary curriculum in which Arabic matn, ritual law, creed, and Hausa Ajami glossing coexist.Designed as a scholarly reader rather than a simple anthology, the book asks what different textual forms actually do in education. A creed, a legal list, a devotional formula, a mnemonic poem, and a bilingual teaching copy do not teach in the same way.Read together, they show how transmitted words become understood knowledge-and how understood knowledge becomes disciplined religious life.
