On the eve of Corpus Christi, 1948, somebody forced the tabernacle of a poor country church in the Crowsnest Pass and carried off what was inside it.

The priest they robbed had been in Cowley two years and had almost nothing to show for it. Nine people came to his first Mass. Four came to the second.

He had been refused a handshake on the railway platform the day he arrived, told plainly that nobody in the district had asked the bishop to send anyone.

He divided what bread he could afford into seven pieces and bought oil for the sanctuary lamp before he bought food. That spring he wrote sixteen pages to his bishop asking to be released, and was told no in five typed sentences.

Two days after the theft, two thousand people from four surrounding towns were walking the ditches along Highway 3.>They were questioned separately. Their accounts did not move for forty years, and they did not grow either.

The Church has never examined it.

TAKE ME BACK TO COWLEY is a dramatized account of a story that survives almost entirely in the memory of one Calgary layman who served Father Gino Violini for the last twenty years of his life.

It is about a stubborn, unwell, badly homesick Italian priest in a town that did not want him - and about what was asked of him, by name, on the shoulder of a highway east of Bellevue.

The church at Cowley is a guesthouse now. The windows are original.
