Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The river that built Kirrath is dying, and no one in power wants the city to know why.Ashani measures water for a living - the patient, exacting work of a reckoner in the Water House, translating the Arannu River's rise and fall into numbers the city can trust. When the river begins dropping faster than any drought could explain, she assumes it's a mystery for wiser heads than hers to solve. But the wells are turning brackish. Villages upstream are emptying into Kirrath's gates. And the temple has already told the frightened city that the gods are testing them - an explanation Ashani's own numbers refuse to support. The truth, when she finds it, is worse than an angry god: a neighboring city has quietly stolen the river for its own ambitions, and someone among Kirrath's rulers has known for months. Exposing it could start a war. Staying silent is already killing people she loves. With a canal surveyor who has his own reasons to fear the truth, an aging mentor who paid dearly for honesty once before, and a High Priestess whose faith in the city's leadership is beginning to crack, Ashani must decide what a reckoner owes a city built on a river that no longer keeps its promises. How much is one honest account worth when the truth might cost you everything you're trying to save?
