Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Artificial intelligence can generate prose indistinguishable from that of skilled human authors. It can produce furniture designs that exceed the best human craftsman by every measurable standard. It can outperform expert clinicians in pattern recognition across millions of records. These capabilities are real, impressive, and growing. They are also, philosophically speaking, beside the point. In The Order of Making: Technology, Participation, and the Human Good, philosopher and cultural thinker Jamie Thornberry advances a rigorous and timely thesis: that the natural and the artificial are not inherently opposed, but that technology becomes destructive under specifiable conditions and for identifiable reasons, namely, when it substitutes representations of human participatory activity for the participation itself. The book is organized in four disciplined movements. The first establishes, through Augustine's illumination theory and Aquinas's account of embodied cognition, a participatory epistemology in which the human person knows by genuine engagement with a prior intelligibility, not by the accumulation of data. The second diagnoses the deformation, drawing on Heidegger's analysis of Gestell and Mumford's account of the megamachine, and identifying four specific mechanisms by which digital environments produce what Thornberry calls the disincarnation of making: the progressive abstraction of human activity away from the embodied, resistant encounter with reality through which genuine formation occurs. The third develops the book's central conceptual distinction, between extension and substitution, as a practically useful criterion for evaluating any given technology. The fourth draws the constructive conclusion: a positive account of human prosperity adequate to the technological condition, grounded in the triadic framework of Light (knowing truly), Love (desiring rightly), and Life (living genuinely). This is not a book against technology. It is a book against the confusion of capability with flourishing, of output with formation, and of the representation of human activity with the activity itself. It argues that no increase in technical capability can answer the question of what human beings are for, and that civilizations that mistake the map for the territory eventually lose the ability to read either. The Order of Making is essential reading for philosophers, theologians, cultural theorists, educators, and all who sense that the most consequential questions raised by artificial intelligence are not technical but anthropological, and who want an intellectually serious framework for engaging them.Get your copy and receive a rigorous framework for the most consequential cultural question of our time.
