Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Before Pokémon. Before Garbage Pail Kids. Before Star Wars cards were the biggest thing in a kid's back pocket -- there were cigarette cards, tucked into tobacco tins to make grown-ups buy one brand over another.Trading cards didn't start as sports cards. They started as a marketing gimmick -- a small illustrated card, packed into a product, that turned an ordinary purchase into a small ongoing hunt. This book tells the story of how that gimmick became a century-old hobby, era by era, for the collector who wants to know not just what they're holding, but where it came from.Inside, you'll trace the hobby's full arc: - The cigarette card era of the 1880s-1910s, when tobacco premiums mixed ballplayers, boxers, and wild animals into the very same numbered sets- The rise of Topps and the golden age of gum cards- The novelty and parody boom that gave us Wacky Packages- The media tie-in explosion of Star Wars, Star Trek, and beyond- The wax pack era and Garbage Pail Kids- The 1990s insert-card revolution that invented the modern "chase card"- Today's trading card games, from Pokémon to Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Topps' surprising sale to Fanatics in 2022Each era chapter includes a Collector's Spotlight profiling one landmark set, a Timeline Scrapbook page for your own memories and cards, and a short quiz to test what stuck -- plus a standalone Notable Sets & Categories Index and a full Timeline-at-a-Glance and Glossary at the back.A fast, focused read for history-minded collectors, nostalgic adults revisiting a childhood hobby, and anyone shopping for a gift for the collector who has everything except the story behind it.
