Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

He went into the Alaska Interior to prove a man needs no one.Vernon Hale is a master woodsman, deliberate and self-contained, fluent in everything the wild can do to a person. The year of solitude he arranges for himself is not an escape but a summit: the final proof that a life can be complete and beholden to nothing outside itself. His skill is real. So is the hard, quiet calm he has built from the Stoics. For a long while, the country gives him no reason to doubt either. Then the bush pilot who agreed to fly him out simply doesn't come. No crash, no storm. Only a sky that stays empty until the season closes around him and the truth arrives, slow as cold water: no one is coming. A wound turns septic. The freeze-up seals the last way home. What strands Vernon is not the wilderness. He is far too good at surviving for that to be the danger. The danger is the solitude itself, and the thing his competence was built to hide. Then a half-wild dog drifts to the edge of his clearing, wary and masterless, as reverted as he is becoming. Without deciding to, the two of them begin to unmake and remake each other.A faithful modern retelling of Robinson Crusoe that trades Defoe's Providence for the harder consolations of Stoicism and Buddhism, Vernon Hale is a spare, unsparing novel about solitude, need, and the cost of being found.
