You know how to recognize a chow, pung, kong, and pair. You can follow the basic flow of a mahjong hand. But when it is your turn to discard, you may still find yourself asking the hardest question: What should I do next?Hong Kong Mahjong: The Faanwise Method is a practical, decision-first guide for players who want to move beyond memorizing rules and start understanding the decisions that shape a hand.Hong Kong-style mahjong is not simply about completing four sets and a pair. With a minimum faan requirement common at many tables, players must think about value, hand direction, timing, and safety throughout the hand. A technically complete hand may not be enough if it does not meet the agreed scoring requirement. This book introduces the Faanwise Method, a simple framework built around three questions: Does this tile improve my speed?Does it improve my hand's value? Is it safe to release?Instead of treating every discard as an isolated decision, you will learn how to evaluate your hand in relation to the tiles you hold, the faan you can realistically build, the discards already visible, and the actions of the other players.Inside, you will learn how to: - Understand the Hong Kong mahjong table, tiles, suits, honors, flowers, melds, and turn structure- Recognize chow, pung, kong, and pair formations- Understand the structure of a legal winning hand- Build a hand with a clear direction instead of keeping disconnected tiles- Understand faan and identify the scoring opportunities developing in your hand- Balance hand speed against hand value- Decide when calling a discard helps and when staying concealed makes more sense- Choose stronger discard candidates using tile efficiency- Read discard piles for useful information- Recognize dangerous and relatively safe tiles- Identify when an opponent may be approaching a win- Know when to shift from attacking your own hand to defensive play- Avoid common beginner mistakes such as chasing unlikely hands, calling without a plan, ignoring faan, and breaking useful shapes- Practice hand reading, faan counting, discard decisions, calling decisions, and defensive reading- Develop intermediate skills such as planning several draws ahead, reading multiple opponents, adjusting risk, and recognizing opportunities to combine scoring patternsThe book also includes a structured 7-Day Faanwise Practice Plan and practical checklists designed to help turn concepts into repeatable table habits.Whether you are learning Hong Kong mahjong for the first time or already know the basic rules but want to make more deliberate decisions, this guide gives you a practical system for thinking through the hand.Learn the rules. Understand the faan. Read the table. Make each discard with purpose.
