For decades, Wichita and its surrounding communities carried two pictures of the same man. One was familiar: a municipal code officer who knew the language of rules, a church council president trusted with the practical work of congregational life, a husband and father moving through the rituals of an ordinary Kansas existence. The other picture lived in private files, remembered rooms, typed messages, bind-and-torture scripts, and objects taken from the dead.
Stained Glass, Dark Rooms follows the BTK case through the question that refuses to settle: how could a man be repeatedly seen by his community and still remain invisible as a predator? The story begins with the late discovery that a small computer disk, sent by a killer hungry to be witnessed, pointed back to a church and to Dennis Rader. It then moves through the first killings, the terror that spread through Wichita, the letters and fantasies through which Rader tried to author his own legend, the decades of silence, and the institutional habits that made respectability feel more convincing than warning signs. The victims remain at the emotional center. Their homes, routines, interrupted futures, and families are not props in the killer's mythology. The book treats Rader's documents and trophies as evidence of a predatory system of self-deception, not as spectacle. It follows the case into the courtroom and beyond it, where a guilty plea could establish responsibility but could not return the dead, restore the families' former sense of safety, or erase the community's memory of having lived beside a hidden violence. Written with investigative precision and a sustained atmosphere of compromised reality, this is a story about murder but also about the social value placed on seeming ordinary and the price paid when a community mistakes familiarity for knowledge.| Reihe | Independently published |
