Every position in this book has exactly one move that forces mate. Not a move an engineprefers by a little, and not the move an author liked best. One move that works, and a pagethat shows you why the others fall short.

That claim was checked by exhaustion. A chess engine searches: it looks as farahead as the clock allows and reports the best line it found. For this book a program didsomething different. It walked the complete tree of legal moves out to the end of the matingsequence, kept every branch, and counted how many first moves force mate inside the statedlimit. A position earned its place here only when that count came back at one.

The same walk wrote the solutions, so every defense Black owns is answered in print, andunder each answer you will find the tempting tries listed one by one with the resource thatbreaks them. The check that looks like the end of the game. The capture that looks free. Themove your hand was already reaching for. Those near misses are the part of the page thatteaches.
