Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

What if one of the world's wild cats had been hiding in plain sight for more than a million years?

In 2026, scientists formally recognized a small spotted cat from the cloud forests of Bolivia as a distinct species: Leopardus tilcayo. Local people already knew the animal, but its true evolutionary identity had remained hidden behind its resemblance to other South American tiger cats.

The Tilcayo Cat That Hid for a Million Years tells the remarkable story of how a familiar-looking wild cat forced scientists to redraw part of the feline family tree.

Travel into the mist-covered Yungas of Bolivia, where steep mountains and isolated forests have preserved extraordinary biodiversity. Follow the trail from an unusual kitten once mistaken for a domestic cat to genomic evidence revealing a lineage separated from its relatives for roughly 1.4 million years.

Along the way, discover how scientists use whole-genome sequencing, museum specimens, morphology, geography, and local knowledge to uncover species that may have been overlooked for generations. Explore the complicated world of South America's tiger cats, the evolutionary forces created by the Andes, and other elusive felines including the Andean cat, margay, guiña, and pampas cats.

The book also examines an urgent question: what happens when science finally recognizes a species whose habitat is already under pressure?

Written for curious general readers rather than specialists, this is a story of natural history, evolution, scientific discovery, hidden biodiversity, and the changing ways humans understand the living world.

For readers fascinated by wild cats, zoology, evolution, genetics, conservation, and discoveries that prove nature can still surprise us.
