Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

During the American Civil War, Baltimore was a city divided. While Maryland remained in the Union, many of its citizens quietly supported the Southern cause. Among them were the courageous women associated with Baltimore's Monument Street-women whose loyalty, determination, and sacrifices became part of the city's complicated wartime history.Monument Street Girls explores the lives of Baltimore's Southern sympathizers and the society they created during one of America's most turbulent periods. Through acts of charity, secret correspondence, aid to Confederate soldiers, and steadfast devotion to their beliefs, these women challenged the expectations placed upon them and risked their reputations, freedom, and safety.Set against the streets, homes, hospitals, and gathering places of Civil War Baltimore, this book brings their world to life while examining the difficult choices faced by women living in a closely watched and deeply divided city.A compelling account of loyalty, courage, sacrifice, and remembrance, Monument Street Girls reveals a lesser-known chapter of Baltimore and Maryland history.
