Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Some animals once shared our planet and are no longer here, but their stories still matter.

They Once Lived Here is a richly illustrated nonfiction guide that introduces young readers to remarkable extinct animals and the real science behind their disappearance.

From the dodo, thylacine, Great Auk, passenger pigeon, Carolina parakeet, quagga, Steller's sea cow, and woolly mammoth to lesser-known species such as the Bramble Cay melomys, Schomburgk's deer, Southern gastric-brooding frog, Christmas Island pipistrelle, and Sea Mink, children discover animals that once lived in very different habitats around the world.

Each species is explored through clear, engaging information about where it lived, what it ate, how it was adapted to its environment, what changed, and what scientists can still learn from the evidence left behind.

The deeper-reading sections introduce important ideas from ecology, evolution, biodiversity, habitat loss, hunting, invasive species, disease, climate pressures, and wildlife conservation. Thought-provoking questions encourage children to compare causes, examine evidence, and understand why scientists sometimes need to keep uncertainty visible.

Designed for curious young readers, the book combines animal facts, natural history, science, and conservation in an accessible format that works well for independent reading, family learning, homeschool study, and classroom enrichment.

They Once Lived Here encourages children not only to remember species that disappeared, but also to understand why protecting the wildlife that still exists today matters.

A thoughtful journey through extinction, science, biodiversity, and our shared responsibility for the natural world.
