Almost every popular debt book gives its advice as a rule. Pay the smallest balance first. Keep a thousand dollars in the bank. Never borrow for a car. Pay the house off early. Each of those rules has a number attached to it - what it costs or saves in a particular household - and that number is almost never printed.
This is the same kind of plan: seven steps, in order, each with a definition of done. What is different is that every step is costed, in front of you, with the numbers on the page, so you can redo them with your own. A makeover changes how a thing looks. A rebuild changes how it is put together. What is inside- The four numbers that govern everything, and the two hours it takes to find them - because almost no household knows its own position, and that is not carelessness: the information sits in nine institutions and none has a reason to assemble it.- The payoff-order argument, settled. Smallest balance first, or highest rate first? For the household worked through in Chapter 7 the difference is $114 and not one extra day - about 0.2% of what it will repay. In a minority of households it is thousands, and a ten-second test tells you which you are.- The cheapest action in the book: freezing every revolving payment at today's dollar amount. Twenty minutes, no money, nothing given up - and $18,658 and twenty years in the household of Chapter 5.- Eleven scheduled hours on housing, transport, insurance and debt terms, which in that same household produced $8,328 a year, recurring - more than any plausible change in daily habits.- What each debt really costs: cards, cars, student loans, the mortgage, medical bills, and the new consumer credit that did not exist when the famous plans were written. The finance-a-new-car cycle alone runs to about half a million dollars over a working life.- Why plans are abandoned - at month three and at month ten, both times through failures of feedback rather than of will - and the four structural changes that prevent it. Not a moral book>289 pages. Eighty-two figures, seventy-eight tables, a hundred and twenty-nine worked examples, twelve appendices - including the plan on one page, the two-hour audit as a worksheet, the payoff calculation done by hand, every formula in the book, six scripts for the calls people find hardest to make, and the whole book in twenty-four sentences. For anyone carrying consumer debt who wants the numbers rather than the slogans; households that have tried a plan and stopped; couples who agree on the figures and cannot agree on a plan; and anybody who has followed a rule of thumb for years without ever being told what it costs. Appendix F rates every substantive claim as established, reasonably firm, contested, arithmetic, or the author's own - and names the four places the author is most likely to be wrong.| Reihe | Independently published |
