Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

On September 23, 2001, twelve days after 9/11, thirteen coal miners died two thousand feet beneath Brookwood, Alabama. Twelve of them died going in toward one trapped man.A roof fall in the Jim Walter Resources No. 5 mine set off an explosion and left Gaston Adams too badly hurt to move. For the next fifty-five minutes, men all over the mine put down their work and started toward him. Then the second explosion came.Fifteen hundred mourners came to the funerals. The nation, its eyes elsewhere, never did. In twenty-five years, no book or film has told the story.Fifty-Five Minutes at No. 5 tells it: the town that grew up out of the coal, the mine, the two days before, the fifty-five minutes, the fifty-five-day recovery, the investigation, the twenty-four-day hearing, and the memorial service Brookwood has held every September since.Built entirely from the federal investigation and the court record. Real people, under their own names. No invented dialogue, and no blame laid on any man. With maps, photographs from the record, and a glossary of the language of the mine.Published on the twenty-fifth anniversary. The last page is the thirteen names.
