Decorations and Party Food Made From What You Already Own

Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

It's the second week of October and the cart on your phone has come to more than the electric bill. Skeleton, lights, cobwebs, candy. You close the laptop.

There is a third option between that cart and one sad pumpkin on the step, and it starts with a laundry basket and a fifteen-minute walk through your own house. The cardboard in your recycling is thicker and takes paint better than anything in the seasonal aisle. The sheet with the bleach mark is a ghost. The jars under the sink are the reason the whole room will look good after dark.

This is a working method, not a list of crafts. Every project is built from things you already own, cut into flat shapes, painted badly on purpose, and lit from below. You will spend an afternoon instead of a paycheck, and your house will look like somebody bothered with it rather than like somebody ordered from the same three designs as everyone else on the street.

Inside you will find:

- The fifteen-minute hunt through six places in your house that pays for most of the decorating- Four cardboard shapes that cover nearly every idea you have had, and how to get the cardboard free- The three-part formula for a hanging ghost that actually moves, from a sheet you were going to throw away- What to do with jars, tin cans and bottles so they carry the entire night- The one free change that makes homemade decorations look expensive and bought ones look unnecessary- A front door and a lit path that stop people at the end of the sidewalk- Cost per head with the arithmetic shown, so you can feed a crowd out of the pantry- Ten recipes from a bag of flour, one pumpkin and a bag of cheap candy- One punch made big, and the ice trick that keeps it cold until the last guest leaves- A run sheet for the night itself, and twenty minutes of packing away that makes next October cheaper still
