Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The gates of Jerusalem opened on October 2, 1187 - and the army that had spent weeks battering its walls walked in without setting the city to the sword.Eighty-eight years earlier, Christian conquerors had taken this same city by storm and killed for three days without mercy. Every precedent suggested the same fate was coming again. It didn't. The man who had just annihilated an entire Crusader army at the Horns of Hattin, capturing its king and its most sacred relic, chose ransom over slaughter - and the medieval world never quite recovered from the shock of it.His name was Saladin. Born the same night his family was exiled from a fortress town on the Tigris, he rose from a soldier's modest service under a pious Syrian ruler to become the man who united a fractured Muslim world - fighting fellow Muslims for over a decade before he ever seriously threatened a Crusader kingdom. He ended a rival caliphate almost bloodlessly. He survived two assassination attempts by the sect history would remember as the Assassins. And in 1187, he took Jerusalem back. Then came his hardest adversary yet: Richard the Lionheart, a king whose own reputation for brilliance and brutality would come to rival Saladin's - sending a physician to heal his enemy one month, executing thousands of prisoners the next.A Crown Across the Desert tells the full, unflinching story: the mercy and the massacres, the empire built through decades of war, and the sultan who died with barely enough money for his own funeral - having given nearly everything else away.
