Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

399 BC. Athens has just survived a war it nearly didn't, and a tyranny that came from within its own walls.Into a jury of five hundred and one frightened, grieving citizens walks a seventy-year-old stonemason's son who has spent his life asking uncomfortable questions in the marketplace - and who refuses, even now, to stop. The Trial of Socrates traces the full story behind history's most consequential legal proceeding: the catastrophic war with Sparta, the bloody reign of the Thirty Tyrants, the comic caricature that primed a city to distrust its own philosopher, and the fatal misstep in the courtroom itself that turned a narrowly divided jury into a death sentence. Drawing on Plato, Xenophon, and two centuries of modern scholarship, Robert F. Geissler reconstructs not just what happened to Socrates, but why - and what his death still has to say about the fragile line between majority rule and injustice.A gripping, meticulously sourced account of the trial that has haunted free societies for twenty-four centuries.
