Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Rome did not conquer through discipline alone. Its soldiers carried a carefully developed system of weapons designed for close combat, missile fighting, protection, and battlefield control.ROMAN LEGIONARY WEAPONS examines the three weapons most closely associated with the Roman legionary: the gladius, pugio, and pilum. Rather than treating them as isolated objects, this book explains how they developed, how they were constructed, how they were carried and used, and how they functioned alongside the scutum and the wider equipment of the Roman army.Drawing on archaeological evidence, ancient sources, surviving weapons, and modern scholarship, the book follows the evolution of Roman military arms from the Republic through the Imperial period. It also examines the gradual transition from the compact gladius to the longer spatha and explains what surviving weapons can reveal about Roman manufacturing, maintenance, supply, and battlefield practice.Inside, discover: - The origins and development of the gladius- The principal gladius types, including Hispaniensis, Mainz, and Pompeii- How Roman swords were constructed, carried, maintained, and used- The role of the pugio as both a military dagger and a highly visible piece of equipment- The construction and battlefield purpose of the pilum- Why the traditional idea that every pilum was specifically designed to bend is too simplistic- How gladius, pugio, pilum, and scutum worked together as a combat system- The gradual rise of the spatha and the changing nature of Roman military equipment- What archaeology, surviving blades, scabbards, fittings, and weapon fragments reveal about the Roman armyClear, focused, and richly illustrated, ROMAN LEGIONARY WEAPONS presents the weapons of the Roman soldier as historical artifacts shaped by technology, logistics, training, and centuries of military experience.LEGENDARY WEAPONS - Volume 1A series exploring the weapons, equipment, development, and historical context of the warriors and armies of the ancient world.
