Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

From Bondage to Bloomingdale is a deeply researched family history tracing generations of the Williams, Morris, Murrell, and Gipson families across more than a century of American life.Beginning with the challenge of reconstructing a family line whose earliest documentary connections remain incomplete, author Robert Louis Williams Jr. follows the evidence from post-emancipation Pennsylvania through industrial towns, Niagara Falls, New Orleans, Kentucky, Southern California, and the military installations that brought once-separate family branches together. At the center of the story are the homes, occupations, military service, migrations, marriages, photographs, and memories that allowed one family to endure and remain connected across generations. Addresses such as 965 First Avenue in Pennsylvania and 3239 Bloomingdale Court in New Orleans become more than locations-they become anchors through which family history can be recovered. But this is also a book about how family history is built. Rather than filling gaps with assumptions, Williams openly examines conflicting records, mistaken identities, inherited family stories, and genealogical claims that remain unproven. The book acknowledges that the documentary bridge to a specifically identified enslaved ancestor has not yet been established, preserving those unanswered questions for future generations. From Bondage to Bloomingdale is ultimately a story of migration, service, resilience, memory, and stewardship-and of one family's determination to leave the next generation not simply a family tree, but a trustworthy record of where they came from and what remains to be discovered.
