Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

When people talk about the history of Baltimore, Maryland, they often talk about the harbor, the railroad, the shipyards, the factories, the rowhouses, and the working people who helped build the city. The Irish belong in every part of that story. For generations, Irish immigrants and their descendants have called Baltimore home. They came across the Atlantic looking for work, religious freedom, food, security, and a chance to build better lives for their families. Some arrived before the American Revolution. Others came during the early nineteenth century as Baltimore developed into one of America's most important ports and industrial cities. Then, during and after Ireland's Great Hunger of the 1840s, another large wave arrived. They did not come to an easy life. Many arrived with very little money. They took difficult and sometimes dangerous jobs. They worked on railroads, docks, construction projects and in factories. They became laborers, railroad men, policemen, firefighters, merchants, priests, teachers, businessmen and politicians. They also created neighborhoods.Baltimore's Irish story could be found in the rowhouses of West Baltimore, around the harbor, and in communities such as Fells Point, Canton, Highlandtown and Locust Point. Irish families worshiped in Catholic churches, sent their children to parish schools, gathered in neighborhood taverns and meeting halls, and established businesses that became part of Baltimore life. The Irish influence was not limited to one neighborhood. It stretched across Baltimore.
