Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Long before the zodiac became a language of horoscopes and personality types, it was a place of gods, monsters, hunters, healers, lost children, grieving sisters, impossible journeys, and civilizations trying to understand the heavens.Beyond the Twelve returns the zodiac to that older sky.Moving through thirteen constellations-from Aries and the Golden Ram to Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer-JS Moore explores the ancient stories humanity placed among the stars and the real celestial wonders that inspired them. Greek and Roman traditions stand alongside older Mesopotamian and Babylonian imagery, with excursions into Egyptian and other cultural interpretations that reveal how dramatically the same stars can change when viewed through different human eyes. Here, Taurus is more than a bull: he carries Europa across the sea while the Hyades mourn nearby. Gemini becomes a meditation on Castor and Pollux and the extraordinary choice to share mortality. Cancer remembers the nearly forgotten Karkinos. Leo can be viewed from the opposite bank of the water, where the hunter Hyas encounters a lioness protecting her young. Virgo carries grain from the ancient furrow. Libra weighs both the heavens and the human desire for justice. Scorpius humbles the seemingly invincible Orion. Sagittarius reaches beyond the familiar image of Chiron to the far older Pabilsag and the mysterious history of the celestial Archer. And then the journey goes beyond the twelve.Ophiuchus rises above Scorpius holding the serpent, identified in one enduring Greek tradition with Asclepius-the healer whose knowledge became so great that he challenged death itself.Throughout the book, mythology is placed beside astronomy rather than confused with it. Precession moves the equinoxes and solstices away from their ancient constellations. Familiar stars reveal themselves as suns of astonishing scale. The Milky Way opens behind Sagittarius toward the center of our galaxy. Ancient names, seasonal markers, star clusters, and celestial geography show why these particular regions of the night sky captured human imagination for millennia. Each chapter moves through the sky, the myth, and the symbol, asking not merely what ancient people believed, but why their stories have endured. A separate Under This Sign section then examines the traditional astrological interpretation associated with each of the twelve signs, while Ophiuchus is deliberately treated differently: as a constellation beyond the traditional twelve-sign system rather than an invented "thirteenth horoscope."Lavishly illustrated and written for readers of mythology, astronomy, history, art, and ancient culture, Beyond the Twelve is ultimately about something older than astrology: human beings looking upward, recognizing patterns in the darkness, and telling stories about what it means to be alive beneath the stars.
