Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

What happens when the U.S. government asks whether the mind can gather intelligence beyond the reach of the senses?During the Cold War, American intelligence agencies funded experiments in remote viewing: attempts to describe distant people, places, and events without ordinary access to them. What began as controversial research at Stanford Research Institute developed into a secret military effort whose viewers were asked to examine Soviet targets, search for missing people, and address other intelligence questions. In PROJECT STARGATE, Dennis Henderson follows the program from its early experiments through GRILL FLAME, CENTER LANE, SUN STREAK, and the operation that gave this history its most familiar name. He introduces the researchers and military viewers, examines the sessions that made remote viewing famous, and follows the scientific dispute that shaped the program's 1995 review.Drawing on declassified records and the arguments of both proponents and skeptics, this book asks two questions that are often confused: Did the experiments reveal an unexplained effect? And did remote viewing produce intelligence the government could rely on?The records offer remarkable claims, serious objections, and a history far more interesting than a simple verdict. PROJECT STARGATE is an investigation into psychic espionage-and into the limits of what the evidence allows us to say.
