Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

A Cold War experiment crossed a continent. The surviving record shows how-and where certainty ends.In 1957 and 1958, the U.S. Army Chemical Corps carried out Operation LAC, or Large Area Coverage, a classified program designed to test whether aerosol-sized material could disperse across enormous distances. Using fluorescent zinc cadmium sulfide particles as a nonbiological tracer, a C-119 aircraft created long airborne release lines while a network of Civil Aeronautics Authority and Weather Bureau stations collected thousands of filters for analysis. The Fluorescent Trail reconstructs that operation from the sequence of decisions, flights, weather systems, sampling points, and later records that can still be supported. It follows the first continental trial from South Dakota toward International Falls, then examines the February test and the later routes from Toledo toward Abilene and from Detroit through Springfield toward Goodland. Across changing conditions, the central finding remained: the atmospheric particle field could become far larger than the aircraft route that created it.But this is not a story that turns every gap into proof. The book separates what Operation LAC documented from what later claims require. It distinguishes the program from other U.S. biological-warfare tests, examines why zinc cadmium sulfide was selected, and shows how aircraft position, detected particles, environmental exposure, individual dose, and later medical outcomes are different evidentiary questions. The investigation also follows the human side of a test range without a fence. Communities beneath the release geography were not incorporated into the decision to conduct the tests, while the military sampling system measured particles rather than individual people. When the program became public and Cold War records opened, that design choice became crucial: the operational history could be reconstructed more strongly than any person-by-person exposure history.Drawing on the surviving Army record and later National Research Council review discussed in the manuscript, the book examines the toxicological uncertainty around zinc cadmium sulfide, the limits of retrospective exposure reconstruction, missing or restricted records, and the difference between documented secrecy and unsupported allegations. Where dates conflict, the conflict remains visible. Where evidence stops, the reconstruction stops with it.Written as a restrained historical investigation, The Fluorescent Trail is a study of Cold War biological-warfare research, atmospheric aerosol dispersion, military secrecy, institutional decision-making, public exposure concerns, and the limits of declassified evidence.Follow the fluorescent trail from aircraft release to distant filters-and through the unresolved distance between what the government measured and what the public later needed to know.
