The Black Ball

Of The Black Ball, almost nothing remains: a few lines, a scene, a confidence. A young man, rejected from a casino following the drawing of a black ball, reveals his homosexuality to his father. That is all-or almost all. And yet, from this almost nothing emerges an enigma. In this essay, José Pérez explores this fragment as one might explore a fissure: slowly, word by word, silence after silence. What might The Black Ball have been? A novel? A play? A rupture within Lorca's body of work? Or perhaps already a form of writing poised at the edge of its own disappearance?Through a close reading of the fragments, by placing them in tension with the great works-from Blood Wedding to Poet in New York-and through a dialogue with the European avant-gardes, this book advances a strong hypothesis: The Black Ball was not an unfinished work, but a work prevented from coming into being, displaced into a realm where language touches its own limits.José Pérez (1959), a former journalist and ministerial adviser, poet, Spanish-Belgian playwright, and author of several essays, offers here an essay that lies somewhere between history, criticism, and meditation on silence. A brief yet dense text, for readers seeking a different kind of reading experience, attentive as much to what escapes as to what is spoken.
