Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The weapons that defined the Viking warrior were more than symbols of violence-they were the product of craftsmanship, status, military experience, and a changing world of warfare. From the late eighth to the eleventh century, Scandinavian warriors carried an arsenal that ranged from finely made swords and powerful axes to spears, seaxes, shields, bows, helmets, and mail. Each weapon had its own strengths, limitations, cost, and role on the battlefield.VIKING WEAPONS examines these arms as real historical tools rather than legendary objects. Drawing on archaeology, surviving weapons, material culture, and historical evidence, the book explores how Viking weapons were made, carried, maintained, and used across Scandinavia, the British Isles, the Frankish world, the Baltic, and the eastern routes of the Viking Age.Inside, discover: - The full arsenal of the Viking warrior and how equipment varied by wealth, status, and military role- The origins, construction, typologies, and development of the Viking sword- How swords functioned in combat alongside shields and armor- The evolution of the Viking axe from practical tool to specialized weapon of war- Why the spear was one of the most important and widespread Viking weapons- The role of the seax, knives, and other close-combat arms- Round shields, helmets, mail, and the defensive system of the Norse warrior- How weapons worked together in raids, formations, shipboard fighting, and larger battles- The influence of trade, craftsmanship, imported blades, and regional variation- The realities of Viking warfare beyond popular myths and modern stereotypesRather than treating the sword, axe, spear, or shield in isolation, this volume presents the Viking arsenal as an interconnected military system shaped by technology, economics, terrain, organization, and human skill.VIKING WEAPONS is a focused study of the arms, craftsmanship, and fighting equipment of the Norse warrior-designed for readers interested in Viking history, medieval warfare, ancient weapons, military archaeology, and the material culture of early medieval Scandinavia.LEGENDARY WEAPONS - Volume 3
