Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Essaouira, the twelfth of August. Half of Morocco is on the beach, a Gnaoua troupe is playing the eclipse down into the Atlantic, and when the light comes back the young Englishman who has been holding the bass line is nowhere on the sand.

Alec and Judith Strand came for the Nuits de Mogador and for the eclipse, on Judith's condition that they came for nothing else. What they have is a roof terrace under the sea bastion, a riad keeper who knows what everybody's cousin does for a living, and a fortnight. Adam Renshaw - twenty-four, five months into an apprenticeship his father in Surrey still refers to as a phase - had adopted them by the end of the first pot of tea.

The police are unhurried, since grown men are entitled to leave. His father, reading the blog from England, asks Alec to find out whether his son is alive. And Alec, who has been posting photographs all week to three hundred thousand subscribers, learns that one of them has been read by exactly the wrong person: a name surfaces in the comments, somebody else's private arrangement becomes a public one, and none of it can be called back.

Behind all this stands a family whose name is on the argan cooperatives in the hills, on the export office by the port, and on a deal arranged for the good of a balance sheet. They are courteous, hospitable, and quite certain that nothing whatever has happened.

Judith puts down her book and starts a fresh legal pad. Alec goes back to the people who talk to him - the driver, the riad keeper, the woman cracking nuts in the co-operative yard. Between them they have a fortnight, no standing of any kind, and a slowly hardening suspicion that they might have been looking at this the wrong way round.
