Thomas Arend has spent eleven years confirming that closed things are closed. Four files in a thousand. Fourteen thousand files. Four findings, all upheld, none of them consequential. He is fifty-four, he does not drink, and he reads the parts nobody reads, because the parts nobody reads are where the thing will be if the thing is anywhere.

The determination is correct. He agrees with every line of it. A man has died alone of his own chemistry on an island where the wealthy spend four days doing anything they want and go home remembering none of it. No third party. No further action. File complete.

A complete file is a closed file. That is the whole of the problem.

Everybody laughs, kindly. The engine cannot lie - it has no capacity for it, no model of an interlocutor, nothing for a lie to be for. Neither can a thermometer, says Thomas, and it can still be in the wrong room.

Five months of red tape later he signs a non-disclosure instrument he has no business signing, and goes to the island with the machine that made the determination rolling along behind him, answering every question completely and truthfully, which turns out to be very much worse than deceit.

What he finds is not a murderer. There isn't one. There is a licensed facility in which every person in the chain did exactly what they were supposed to do; a paragraph in a plant manual; eleven synthetic targets and a service log that records twelve; a checklist with no item on it because nothing had ever happened; and a camera that pointed at an empty chair for forty-one seconds, because the slot was a slot.
