Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Father Seraphim Rose was one of the most influential and controversial Orthodox Christian voices to emerge in twentieth-century America. Born Eugene Dennis Rose in California, he passed through atheism, Asian philosophy, Taoism, the circle of Alan Watts, and the intellectual crisis of modernity before entering the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia and embracing monastic life in the mountains of Northern California.Father Seraphim Rose: A Biographical-Theological Study is not a fictionalized life story, a devotional hagiography, or a polemical defense. It is a serious study of a convert, monk, priest, writer, translator, and missionary whose life and work continue to shape Orthodox readers around the world.Drawing on biographies, private correspondence, church records, published writings, and historical sources, Nikolaos Argyrelis follows Rose from San Diego and Berkeley to San Francisco, Platina, priesthood, and his early death in 1982.The book examines the St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood, Rose's major writings, his critique of nihilism and modern spirituality, his teaching on death and the soul, his views on ecumenism and evolution, and the clandestine circulation of his writings in the Soviet Union. It also considers the controversies that followed his death, the later history of the Brotherhood, his growing veneration, and the continuing discussion surrounding his ecclesial glorification. The result is neither uncritical praise nor dismissal. It is a portrait of a complex Orthodox Christian figure whose central question remains urgent: how can a modern person recover truth, repentance, spiritual sobriety, and a life rooted in the Church?
