Eke. Orie. Afo. Nkwo.
In a traditional southeastern Nigerian village, these market days mark the rhythm of everyday life. Children grow up surrounded by family, neighbours, farmland, village gatherings, stories, and the voices of elders who remember a different time. For Adaeze, one of the most important places in her childhood is the old udara tree standing inside her family compound. Under its shade, she listens to her grandmother, Mama Nneoma, tell folktales, family stories, and lessons about life. Around the same tree, relatives gather, visitors are welcomed, disagreements unfold, and memories are made. From market days and family gatherings to the excitement of the New Yam Festival, Adaeze gradually discovers the traditions and relationships that shape her understanding of home. But life does not remain the same. Her brother leaves to pursue his education. Adaeze begins dreaming of a life beyond the village. Family members move away, old disagreements surface, and questions about the future of the family compound bring generations into conflict. Even the old udara tree becomes part of a difficult decision about change and tradition. As Adaeze grows older, she begins to understand that loving where you come from does not mean you can never leave it. It means deciding what is worth carrying with you. Where the Udara Tree Stands is a story about family, childhood, Igbo traditions, changing generations, and the memories that connect people to home. Through storytelling, community life, festivals, food, family relationships, and the ordinary moments of growing up, the novel explores what happens when tradition meets a changing world. And when Adaeze eventually returns home, she discovers that although the people and the compound have changed, some memories remain. The story comes full circle when a new generation gathers beneath the udara tree and Adaeze becomes the storyteller. Because places may change, families may grow apart and come together again, but the stories we pass down can keep a part of home alive.| Reihe | Independently published |
