Mansa Musa ruled the Mali Empire in the early fourteenth century and made a pilgrimage to Mecca that drew attention across the Islamic world. This book follows the evidence for his life and for the society that made his reign possible. No surviving record gives us his private thoughts, childhood scenes, or a year-by-year account of the court. Where the record falls silent, the narrative does not invent a scene. The wider world into which he was born was itself in motion. In Egypt the Mamluk sultans had replaced the Ayyubids and made Cairo the greatest city of the western Islamic world. Across the Sahara, camel caravans still measure the year by the salt of Taghaza and the gold of the south. In the central Mediterranean, Christian and Muslim merchants already knew that "the land of the Blacks" was a source of gold, even when they could not draw its rivers correctly. Musa did not invent that knowledge. He would, in 1324, force the learned world to write it down in a new register of astonishment.
