The stone says Copper. The room says Bronze twenty-one, with the reasons. Both papers carry the day.The room on the wall lane is in its second year. Anybody may walk in off the street, pay a silver, sit in a chair eighteen inches from the window and be told what they are, with the reasons, and it goes in a book on a table that anybody may read. Since the first of September a master may hire against a paper dated and current, and the rule does not say whose. So on the first morning of the second year a woman walks in off the road from the next county with a paper thirty years old. She stands the stone on the hill and is told what it told her then. She sits in the chair on the wall lane and is told something else, with the reasons. She puts both papers in her coat and goes to see which one a merchant wants. After that it is a year of two papers. A captain's yard with two kinds on every man in it and a contract that has to say which one stands. A warden who will not register the room's roll, and forty silver paid to make him. An alehouse keeper whose second reading is a point above her first, and a reason for it that nobody thought to write down. A girl read again, and read again, and holding. Then a merchants' Table sends the Assay a question of record it has never once had to answer: when the stone returns the same word twice, has it read the person, or repeated the roll.Five thousand six hundred people have stood the stone a second time since September and not one of them has moved. Nobody on that hill can say whether that is a stone that is never wrong or a book with nowhere to write that it was, because there is only one way to tell, and it is not a stone. It is a second column.Owen Pike has spent two years saying the county will have to build one. He is about to watch it built, in a clerk's hand, on a hill, with no line in it for the man who looks.About the seriesA progression fantasy about worth rather than power. A protagonist who cannot fight and never pretends otherwise. A full party, four ways, even shares. A walled guild town where rank is law, a stone that measures what a person has done rather than what they are, and numbers that hold their shape from level one to the end of book seven.Book three of seven. Begins on the morning book two ends.
